Defeat Identity Theft Now

Arizona Proclaims Identity Theft Awareness Week
March 2-8, 2008

State Leads Nation in Number of Identity Theft Complaints

Tempe, Ariz. (February 25, 2008) – Combating what has been termed “the fastest growing crime in the U.S.”, Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano announced that the state will proclaim the week of March 2-8, 2008 as Identity Theft Awareness Week. For the eighth straight year, the Federal Trade Commission has documented significant increases in the number of identity thefts, which has become a multi-billion dollar crime. Arizona has been the highest ranking state for reported identity theft cases for the past four years.

Arizona-based LifeLock®, the first U.S. identity theft prevention company and the recognized industry leader, was the catalyst to the state of Arizona’s proclamation. The company has been working with state officials to raise awareness of the seriousness of this crime and the need for stronger legislative efforts to prosecute identity thieves and safeguard consumers.

In conjunction with Identity Theft Awareness Week, LifeLock is initiating the first ever “Strike Back – Defeat Identity Theft Now” grassroots campaign beginning February 24, designed to bring attention to the serious issues that affect consumers as a result of identity theft. LifeLock will travel for two weeks and log 6,620 miles. Along the campaign trail, LifeLock CEO Todd Davis will be accompanied by identity theft prevention ambassadors and former victims, hosting events and seminars at a variety of locations including college campuses, corporate headquarters, senior living facilities, festivals, and financial institutions.

Among the issues that Davis will address on the campaign trail include: lessened use of social security numbers, stronger penalties for identity thieves, better standards for lost and stolen data, and universal use of the national credit registry, among others.

Attendees at each of the events will have the opportunity to sign a petition requesting Congress to enact more stringent laws to protect consumers from losses of data, problems of identity theft, and prosecute the perpetrators of the crime. Signatures will be delivered to congressional leaders in Washington, DC on Thursday, March 6. The petition can be found at: www.lifelock.com.

“It is time that consumers collectively take a stance to help defeat identity theft. This white collar crime can destroy not only someone’s credit, but also their financial well being and future,” said Davis. “We are pleased to be working with the Governor to shed light on this very serious offense that has affected millions of Americans over the past five years and serve as a catalyst for much needed change.”
