Nearly 4 Million Medical Records Compromised in Data Breach

A company that you’ve likely never heard of has been the subject of a data breach, losing a breathtaking amount of information on nearly four million Americans.

The data includes Social Security Numbers, names and addresses, phone numbers and email addresses, user names and passwords, security questions and passwords, medical conditions and lab results, health insurance policy information and disability codes, and more. And your kids aren’t safe either—their information was also stolen.

The information was taken from electronic medical record services provider Medical Informatics Engineering (MIE) and its subsidiary NoMoreClipboard. The records pilfered were from Jan. 1, 1997 to May 26, 2015.

Josh Cannell, a malware analyst at Malwarebytes Labs, told eSecurity Planet that the information is a goldmine for cybercriminals, "For example, the most obvious use of this information would be for identity theft, which can cause a lot of financial headaches that can last for many years. Another potential abuse of this information could be seen in spear-phishing emails that may be sent to the victims of the breach, using PII to make the email seem legitimate, thus leading to a malware infection."
