Sally Beauty Supply Investigates Possible Breach

The latest nationwide retailer to face a possible data breach is Texas-based beauty supply chain Sally Beauty, according to cybersecurity blogger Brian Krebs.

Krebs, who broke the news of the Target breach, said Wednesday that his information comes from banking and cybercrime sources who investigated a batch of 282,000 stolen credit and debit cards that recently went on sale at an underground website. Three banks that bought batches of those card numbers found 15 of their own cards in those batches, and all 15 had been used at Sally Beauty stores in the same time period, according to Krebs.

A statement issued by Sally Beauty Holdings Inc. confirmed that the company recently detected an attempted intrusion into its network but said it does not believe any data was taken. “As a result of our ongoing investigation, which included assistance from a top-tier security firm, we have no reason to believe there has been any loss of credit card or consumer data," the company said in the statement. "We will continue to investigate and actively monitor this situation.”

Sally Beauty Holdings, Inc. is an international retailer and distributor of professional beauty supplies and takes in more than $3.5 billion in revenue annually. It has 2,600 U.S. stores and a total of 4,500 stores worldwide.
