Approximately 15 million people are being impacted by the T-Mobile data breach.
Customers and applicants of the cell phone carrier between Sept. 1, 2013 and Sept. 16, 2015 had their personal information, including names, Social Security numbers and birthdates, stolen by an unknown party.
Experian — the vendor that processes T-Mobile’s credit applications — notified T-Mobile that one of its servers was hacked following the Sept. 15, 2015 discovery.
"I take our customer and prospective customer privacy very seriously,” T-Mobile CEO John Legere stated. “This is no small issue for us. I do want to assure our customers that neither T-Mobile’s systems nor network were part of this intrusion and this did not involve any payment card numbers or bank account information.”
Experian notified authorities upon discovering the breach, and noted on its website that it’s “taken additional security steps to help prevent future incidents.”
The investigation is ongoing.
