Saks, Lord & Taylor Breach Exposes 5 Million Credit and Debit Card Numbers: What to Do Now

By Steve Symanovich, a Symantec employee

A data breach hit Saks Fifth Avenue, Saks OFF 5TH, and Lord & Taylor stores, possibly exposing 5 million debit and credit card numbers, according to news reports.

Media reports have indicated that hackers have put some of the card information up for sale on the dark web.

What does it mean for consumers? The exposed data could potentially raise the risk of identity theft and fraud for some shoppers.

What you need to know about the Saks data breach

Here’s what happened.

If you shopped at certain Saks Fifth Avenue, Saks OFF 5TH, or Lord & Taylor stores in North America after May 2017 and paid with a credit or debit card, you could be at risk. That’s when data thieves are believed to have first attacked the department stores’ point-of-sale payment systems.

“We identified the issue, took steps to contain it, and believe it no longer poses a risk to customers shopping at our stores,” Hudson’s Bay Co., parent company of the department stores, said in a statement on April 2, 2018.

The company said it’s working with data security investigators to get information to customers. The investigation is ongoing. The company said it will notify affected consumers after it has clarity around the facts of the breach.

Am I affected? What you should do

If you think your information may have been affected in the breach, it’s smart to closely monitor your account statements.

Notify your card issuer immediately if you see an unauthorized charge or any charges you don’t recognize.

Hudson’s Bay Company said affected customers will not be liable for fraudulent charges that could result from the hack, and said it will offer affected consumers free identity theft protection services, including credit and web monitoring.

How do I stay on top of this?

Hudson’s Bay Company has several lines of communication for consumers to provide updates on the breach. The company has details online for Saks Fifth Avenue, Saks OFF 5TH, and Lord & Taylor.

Beginning April 4, 2018, dedicated Hudson’s Bay Co. call center representatives will be available. That number is 1-855-270-9187. The center will be open Monday-Saturday, 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. Central Time.
